Disney’s Peter Pan, February 15, 2018
Peter Pan. Directed by Clyde Geronimi, Walt Disney Productions, 1953.

In English class we watched a clip of “What Makes Red Man Red” musical number from the original Peter Pan and discussed the portrayal of the “natives” in the scene. This clip fits within the pillar of “communicate ideas” because it shows how stereotypes were reinforced through the media. Furthermore, this scene supported the concept of this pillar because I learned how racism can be transferred even through a children’s cartoon. This source addresses my overarching question in that it gives more evidence of the white man, the colonizer, dehumanizing Native Americans which has had a negative effect, after over 3 centuries of this, on Native Americans mental health.
