IBL Project, February 5th, 2018 In English class we researched problems that Native Americans face today, specifically how European beauty standards affect Native culture, and created a product to spread awareness about our research’s findings. We learned that Native women have, on average, lower self esteem, higher plastic surgery rates, and are at more risk for sexual abuse than white women. We concluded that the pressure to look like white women has caused many Native women to abandon their culture. For our product, we painted a mural along the path of the indigenous Mexican march that showed a Native Azteca woman in all her beauty with the words “European beauty standards are not the only definitions of beauty”. This research fits into the “Communicate Ideas” pillar because we learned how to take lots of different information and form our own conclusions. Furthermore, the IBL project supported the concept of this pillar because we learned how to effectively reach an audience for our message. This research addresses my overarching question because it shows that colonization has made the majority of Native women insecure.
