“Superman & Me”, January 25th, 2018 Alexie, Sherman, “Superman and Me: The Joy of Reading and Writing.” Los Angeles Times, 19 April 1998. In English class we read and discussed "Superman and Me", an anecdote by Sherman Alexie about growing up in his Native American community, the struggles he faced, and how they affect him today. This reading fits within the pillar of “Investigate the World” because it talks about experiences within a community that I had little knowledge about. It showed me how Native American children grow up on reservations in modern times, and I learned about a way of life very different from my own. Furthermore, the reading supported the concept of this pillar because it showed me how Native American children grow up on reservations in modern times, and I learned about a way of life very different from my own. This source addresses my overarching question because it gives examples from a primary source of extremely poor self esteem among Native American children, especially around white people.
